How would you explain the difference between a reason and an excuse?

I agree with you on the definitions - however, sometimes a reason for something may also serve as an excuse. Perhaps your wife is referring to these instances. But to me it doesn't seem that a reason is "the same" as an excuse even if they may co-inside sometimes.
